Apple-almond-cinnamon Strata

Ingredients

  • Servings: 8
  • 1 lb loaf cinnamon raisin bread, cut into 1-inch pieces
  • 8 eggs, lightly beaten
  • 2 cups milk
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon almond extract
  • 1 (21 ounce) can apple pie filling
  • 1/2 cup slivered almonds, toasted
  • ground cinnamon
  • powdered sugar

Recipe

  • 1 spread bread pieces in a greased 3-quart rectangular baking dish.
  • 2 in a big bowl, beat the eggs, milk, salt, and almond extract together with a whisk.
  • 3 stir in apple pie filling and half of the almonds.
  • 4 carefully pour apple mixture over the bread.
  • 5 press bread pieces down into the egg mixture with a wooden spoon; sprinkle with the remaining almonds.
  • 6 cover and refrigerate for 2-24 hours.
  • 7 bake strata in a preheated 325° oven, uncovered, for 50 minutes or until a knife inserted near the center comes out clean.
  • 8 let stand for 15 minutes before serving.
  • 9 lightly sprinkle cinnamon and/or sifted powdered sugar over the top before serving.
